Jewellery Care Instructions
E2J jewellery is created to be treasured for a lifetime and beyond. Each piece combines craftsmanship with carefully selected materials, and many feature unusual details, antique or vintage elements, and intricate mechanical constructions.
While fine jewellery is made to endure, it is inherently delicate and deserves thoughtful care. Over time, natural signs of wear may appear, including patina, subtle changes to surface finishes and engravings, and minor scratches. These are part of the character and ageing of a piece.
Following a few simple precautions will help preserve the beauty and integrity of your jewellery for years to come.
General Care
-
Store each piece separately in its original box or a soft, lined jewellery case to prevent scratches and accidental damage.
-
Keep jewellery away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, humidity and sudden temperature changes.
-
Avoid contact with perfumes, cosmetics, hairspray, lotions, cleaning products and chlorine.
-
Put your jewellery on last, after applying perfume and cosmetics, and remove it first when undressing.
-
Remove jewellery before swimming, showering, bathing, exercising, sleeping or doing household chores.
-
Avoid wearing rings and bracelets during activities that may cause knocks, pressure or abrasion.
-
Never force a clasp, hinge, fastening or moving component. If a mechanism feels unusually stiff or loose, contact us before attempting to adjust it.
Gold & Platinum
-
Gently wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth after wearing to remove oils and fingerprints.
-
For plain gold or platinum jewellery without delicate components, a little lukewarm water and mild soap may be used, followed by careful drying.
-
Avoid abrasive cleaners, polishing compounds, bleach and harsh chemicals.
-
Remove jewellery before swimming, applying perfume or carrying out household tasks.
-
Be aware that even precious metals can develop fine scratches with regular wear.
If a piece contains gemstones, antique elements, surface treatments or moving mechanisms, please seek advice before using any liquid cleaning method.
Sterling Silver
-
Store in a cool, dry place, preferably in an anti-tarnish pouch or lined jewellery box.
-
Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture, chlorinated water and household chemicals.
-
Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.
-
Silver naturally develops patina over time. This may be an intentional feature of the design.
-
Avoid silver dips and abrasive polishing products, particularly on oxidised, plated or antique surfaces.
Do not attempt to remove patina or darkened finishes without professional advice.
Plated & Coated Jewellery
Some E2J pieces feature rhodium plating, 18ct or 24ct gold plating, or specialist decorative coatings.
-
Plated finishes may gradually fade or develop signs of wear, particularly in areas exposed to friction.
-
Treat plated jewellery as occasion wear rather than jewellery intended for continuous use.
-
Avoid polishing compounds, abrasive cloths and chemical cleaning solutions.
-
Ceramic and decorative coatings can be durable but may chip, discolour or deteriorate following impacts or exposure to moisture and chemicals.
-
Clean gently with a soft, dry, non-abrasive cloth.
Diamonds & Gemstones
-
Keep gemstone jewellery separate from other pieces to avoid scratches and accidental damage.
-
Protect stones and settings from hard impacts, pressure and abrasive surfaces.
-
Clean gently with a soft, lint-free cloth.
-
Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaners unless the specific gemstone, its treatments and the construction of the piece have been professionally assessed.
-
Avoid harsh detergents, alcohol and household cleaning products.
Some gemstones, including opals, emeralds, turquoise and other porous or treated stones, require particular care. Heat, chemicals, sudden temperature changes and inappropriate cleaning methods can permanently affect their appearance or structure.
We recommend having gemstone settings checked periodically, particularly for rings and other pieces worn frequently.
Pearls & Organic Materials
Pearls, coral, amber, horn, bone, shell, wood and other natural materials require special attention.
-
Store separately in a soft pouch or original presentation box to prevent scratches.
-
Keep away from direct sunlight, radiators and other sources of excessive heat.
-
Avoid perfumes, cosmetics, hairspray, cleaning agents and household chemicals.
-
Remove before swimming, showering, exercising or sleeping.
-
Do not soak or immerse these materials in water.
-
Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners.
-
Gently wipe with a clean, soft cloth after wearing.
-
Avoid prolonged exposure to excessive humidity or very dry conditions.
Natural materials may gradually change colour, texture or appearance as part of the ageing process.
Antique & Vintage Elements
Some E2J creations may incorporate original antique or vintage components, including cameos, intaglios, micromosaics, decorative inlays and other historical materials.
These elements may be particularly sensitive to pressure, moisture, temperature changes and unsuitable cleaning products.
-
Handle with care and avoid direct pressure on decorative surfaces.
-
Do not immerse antique components in water or cleaning solutions.
-
Avoid mechanical cleaning, polishing pastes, solvents and ultrasonic equipment.
-
Do not attempt to remove original patina or restore aged surfaces yourself.
-
Keep away from strong impacts and sudden changes in temperature.
The character of antique elements, including their historical patina and naturally aged surfaces, is an integral part of their beauty.
Clasps, Hinges & Moving Components
Certain E2J pieces feature articulated elements, spring mechanisms, hinges, unusual locks or other intricate constructions.
-
Always open and close mechanisms gently and as intended.
-
Make sure clasps and locks are properly secured before wearing.
-
Never pull, twist or force a moving component beyond its intended range.
-
Avoid exposing mechanisms to water, sand, dust or cosmetic products.
-
Do not attempt to lubricate, dismantle or repair mechanisms yourself.
If a clasp, hinge or moving element becomes loose, stiff or damaged, discontinue wearing the piece and contact us for advice.
Professional Care & Repairs
We recommend inspecting your jewellery regularly for signs of wear, loose stones, weakened settings or changes in the operation of clasps and mechanisms.
For frequently worn pieces, a professional inspection approximately once a year is a sensible precaution.
Due to the individual nature of E2J jewellery, certain materials and historical components may not be replaceable. Cleaning, polishing, resizing and repairs should therefore be assessed individually.
Please contact us before arranging any third-party restoration or alteration, particularly for pieces containing antique, fragile or unconventional materials.
